As artificial intelligence continues to reshape our daily lives and transform industries, we must pause to examine the implications of this growing reliance on machine learning and large language models (LLMs). My latest project, I Love America, seeks to do just that, exposing the often-overlooked biases embedded within AI, specifically in its portrayal of American cultural identity.

In this article, I’ll share the motivations behind the series, the critical issues it addresses, and why this work feels more necessary now than ever before.

The Rise of LLMs and the Transformation of Society

We’re living in an era where LLMs, such as OpenAI’s GPT, are no longer confined to niche applications. They’ve entered the mainstream, powering chatbots, assisting in content creation, and driving decisions in businesses and institutions worldwide. This pervasive integration of AI into daily life is changing how we think, work, and interact.

But as we increasingly lean on LLMs for answers and guidance, we must ask: what are the biases they carry? How are these biases shaping the information we receive? And how do they reflect deeper societal prejudices?

These questions are what led me to create I Love America, an exploration of AI’s role in representing cultural identities — specifically the American persona — through the biases embedded in the data they are trained on.

The Biases of AI: More than Just Information Gaps

Bias in AI isn’t a new issue, but it’s often discussed in the context of technology or algorithms. My goal with I Love America is to visualize how these biases materialize through art. These biases are not just technical shortcomings; they reflect societal prejudices, historical context, and systemic inequalities.

In focusing on American identity, I chose to use LLMs as a lens to explore this bias in a tangible and visual way. The way AI interprets and represents America reveals much more than mere generalizations — it showcases the stereotypes and perceptions baked into the data the models have absorbed. And, in doing so, it becomes a reflection of our own collective subconscious as expressed through machine learning.

Art as a Mirror: The Intentions Behind the Series

My intention with this series is twofold: first, to highlight how these AI-driven perceptions are generated, and second, to make the viewer reflect on their own reliance on AI. The series doesn’t shy away from difficult truths. If the AI produces a result that is stereotypical, negative, or even overtly racist, I’ve made a conscious decision to present it as is.

This raw, unfiltered approach serves to provoke thought. These aren’t my personal views; rather, they reflect the biases AI has learned from the vast and imperfect datasets that represent our world.

By presenting this unvarnished depiction of America, the series raises important questions: How do these biases affect our understanding of ourselves? And how might we respond to these AI-generated perceptions when they don’t align with our values?

Why I Won’t Censor the Results

There’s a temptation to sanitize uncomfortable results, to polish away the rough edges of AI-generated outputs that don’t align with what we want to see. But to do so would defeat the purpose of this project. If the AI produces representations of America that are flawed, biased, or problematic, those issues need to be seen and interrogated — not erased.

I am aware that some of the pieces in this series may evoke discomfort, or even offense. However, this discomfort is intentional — it is meant to challenge the viewer to confront the ways in which AI, and by extension society, creates and perpetuates these biases. By not whitewashing the results, I hope to provoke meaningful reflection on the nature of the information we consume and the systems we increasingly depend upon.

A Broader Reflection: Beyond American Identity

While I Love America focuses on the American persona, the biases uncovered extend far beyond just this cultural identity. The AI’s tendency to oversimplify, stereotype, and reinforce societal prejudices can be applied to many identities, and the same questions should be asked about how LLMs shape the portrayal of race, gender, and other cultural frameworks.

In using America as the subject of this series, I hope to offer a case study in how deeply these biases are embedded in AI-generated content. The goal isn’t just to critique AI, but to inspire broader thought about the consequences of relying on technology to reflect our world back to us.

Moving Forward: Sparking Critical Conversations

At the heart of I Love America is the desire to inspire conversation. AI is here to stay, but it’s vital we don’t adopt it uncritically. We need to be aware of the biases embedded in these systems and consider how they shape the information we’re provided. This project is my small contribution to that dialogue — an invitation for viewers to question what they’re receiving, and to think deeply about the ways AI influences perceptions of identity, culture, and reality itself.

In the end, I Love America is a reflection of how AI sees us, and by extension, how we might see ourselves through its eyes. I hope the series challenges viewers to engage with AI not just as a tool but as a mirror of our collective consciousness.
